Cynthia and I met at church. I don’t like being in crowds so I sit outside the main auditorium. I watch the service outside in a foyer area. There was a very pretty lady sitting close. There was a chair between us. Cynthia moved in the chair next to me eliminating the gap. I was recently separated and was glad to have a friend. We exchanged contact information. She called the next day and ask if I would go a small group meeting with her. I said sure. Before the meeting we eat a meal. I bought 3 subs from Publix. Cynthia brought 4 sodas. 

I learned Cynthia was divorced, had been in prison for a crime she did not commit; her car was totaled by a ‘hit and run’ ambulance driver. The police report said the ambulance driver was at fault. No futher actions were taken.

Cynthia and I talk everyday. We live about a mile away and visit often. She loves Pom Pom; my Pomeranian, volunteers to keep him when I go to surgery; Pom Pom also loves Cynthia.

Our church is a ‘white church’. Cynthia is the only black woman in the small group. Sundays show how segregated we are. On Sundays whites socialize with whites; whites socialize very little with blacks. Cynthia represents gender equality, racial equality, financial equality and equality associated with age.

Cynthia, like me, lives in a one bedroom apartment. We used to be rich. By worldly standards we are poor. You see Cynthia is 87 year old; I’m 63. She is black; I am white. black. She is a women; I am a man. She is in worse financial shape than me. Every time we part in person or on the phone, I say, ‘I love you Cynthia! She says I love you Tim.’
And, I pray for you Cynthia; I pray for you Tim.’ Cynthia is in a better mental state than me; she is in better physical health than me. Together we break the mold when it comes to social inequality. Isn’t that why diversity and inclusion about? … Loving each other unconditionally. Following the two greatest commandments ‘ Love God with all your heart and love your neighbor as yourself.
